My Counselling Service *
A warm, calm and accepting space, where I walk alongside you with support and understanding through grief, loss, and bereavement.”
About Me
Firstly, welcome & thank you for visiting my page.
My name is Jane Farrell, and I am a fully qualified counsellor with a BA Honours Degree, specialising in grief, loss, and bereavement. My passion for this work comes from both professional and lived experience.
Having faced several painful bereavements myself, I fully appreciate the intensity, confusion, and emptiness that grief can bring. After the significant passing of my mum, who was central to my life, I found myself searching for meaning and purpose amid my grief.
Choosing to return to university as a mature student and train as a counsellor became a key part of my own healing. It felt like a way of turning the love and loss, into something that could support others. This path has most definitely shaped the way I work, with empathy, patience, and a deep commitment to walking alongside people as they navigate their own journeys.
Professionally, I have spent many years supporting individuals and families through some of life’s most difficult moments, having worked in hospice and end-of-life settings, dementia care, the funeral industry, and now serve as a Family Support Counsellor in hospice, alongside my role as a Crisis Practitioner for a leading mental health charity.
During university, my dissertation focused on how men, particularly those in manual industries, often struggle with mental health due to societal expectations of strength, resilience, and masculinity. These pressures can make it especially hard to seek support, as expressing vulnerability is stereotypically seen as a weakness. This research strengthened my passion for counselling and reinforced the importance of creating a safe, non-judgmental space where all individuals, regardless of gender, can feel supported and understood.
This awareness is especially meaningful in my current crisis role, where I support individuals facing acute distress, including overwhelming anxiety, intense emotional pain, suicidal thoughts, or those experiencing abuse or other traumatic situations. My work is about providing a safe and compassionate space for anyone struggling, helping them feel heard, supported, and less alone in moments of crisis.
As we know, life’s losses can take many forms — the loss of identity, confidence, health, stability, relationships, direction, purpose, or even the person we once were. These experiences can be just as painful and disorienting as the death of a loved one, including our pets and all are welcome in the safe and supportive space I provide.
Counselling is not about fixing grief, because some experiences cannot truly be fixed. I believe what makes a true difference is having someone who is genuinely present. A supporter who listens, understands, and offers what you need in that moment - That is what I aim to do.
My approach is warm, person-centred, and gentle. I will ensure your feelings are validated, your truth is honoured, and your story is heard. Whatever you are carrying — whether your heaviness is a recent bereavement, a loss that has resurfaced from long ago, or a feeling of being unanchored — I will walk with you as you take each step.
Warm Wishes
Jane

Your first session will include a gentle assessment, where I will ask questions to help me understand more about your experience of loss, what has brought you to counselling, and any factors that may be contributing to your grief journey. This helps me listen well and tailor the sessions to your individual needs, and it also gives you a chance to share what you feel comfortable with and ask any questions you might have.
Bereavement counselling offers a safe, confidential space to explore emotions, thoughts, and experiences surrounding your loss. You are not expected to “perform” your grief or follow any particular model — instead, sessions are shaped by what you need in that moment, whether that’s talking about your loved one, exploring how the loss has affected your life, or simply sitting with your feelings.
Many people find that as therapy continues, we naturally work with memories, stories, and meaningful material connected to the person you have lost. This may include talking about significant experiences, recalling cherished memories, or exploring ways to maintain a connection with the person who died, if that feels helpful. Such memory‑focused work can be part of finding a path through grief and can help you make sense of your experiences in a way that honours your relationship.
Throughout your counselling, you can expect:
A non‑judgemental and supportive environment, where you choose how much or how little to share.
Opportunities to speak about your loss at your own pace, including memories, emotions, and the practical impact grief may be having on your life.
Help in exploring coping strategies, meaning‑making, and ways to live with loss that feel authentic to you.
Every person’s grief experience is different, and there is no “right” way for a session to unfold. My role is to offer presence, understanding, and support as you navigate this process.

I understand that life happens and sometimes there will be times when you will need to cancel or reschedule your appointments.
Therefore, it would be appreciated if you provide 48 hours’ notice of cancellation of your scheduled session, where there will be no charge or payment due, and I will endeavour to rearrange your cancelled session at your earliest convenience.
Unfortunately, if there is no prior notice of cancellation or a no-show, then payment will be expected.

And the most Frequently Asked Question…
The Cherry Tree is recognised as a symbol of new beginnings, growth, and reflection — often associated with hope and the delicate balance between joy and impermanence.
I chose this name of Cherry Tree Counsellor with intention: to reflect a journey of healing and possibility, both for myself and for those who seek support beneath its branches. It represents a fresh start, a place of compassionate care, and the quiet strength that comes from nurturing change.
The name is also a tribute to my beautiful mum, who was a deeply loved and inspiring presence in my life. Her ashes rest beneath a cherry tree, and the place I visit often for peace, reflection, and connection. It’s a space of quiet strength and beauty, where I can simply be.
That’s what I hope to offer you, too — a space where you can feel supported, heal, and grow in a way that feels right for you.
Why the Cherry Tree?
